HBO Max is definitely back this July! Originally launched as HBO Max in 2020, the platform was briefly rebranded as Max in 2023 following the merger of Warner Media and Discovery — forming Warner Bros. Discovery. The rebrand aimed to broaden its appeal and showcase a wider range of content.
Now, HBO Max returns to its roots as the go-to destination for world-class entertainment, bringing fans everything from blockbuster movies and acclaimed series to beloved franchises and original programming.
Among the most exciting new titles coming to HBO Max is “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” a spinoff of the beloved hit “The Big Bang Theory.”
The new comedy has officially been greenlit by HBO Max and is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Created and executive produced by Emmy-nominated talents Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, this new chapter takes a bold dive into science fiction while retaining the heart and humor fans have come to expect.
When Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) accidentally triggers a multiverse Armageddon with a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, he’s forced to fix reality — joined by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Naturally, things get chaotic.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content, said, “We’re excited to be continuing the legacy of The Big Bang Theory. Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn’t be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team.”
Chuck Lorre added, “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters from The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about.”
Zak Penn shared, “I was on a vision quest in the Amazon when a note from Chuck Lorre arrived via carrier pigeon asking if I wanted to help make a show the Big Bang characters would watch. I couldn’t resist. Chuck even sent an expedition to unfreeze Bill Prady from arctic ice. Once we reassembled, we created a show that lives in a universe Chuck and Bill built.”
Bill Prady added, “Writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been fun. We’re mixing characters fans already love with a sci-fi mythology they’d obsess over — while keeping the laughs front and center.”
