IN today’s rapidly changing world, where crises such as climate change, social divisions and technological upheavals are becoming more frequent and complex, a cohesive society’s importance cannot be overstated. A society that unites its people, regardless of race, religion or background, is better equipped to face these challenges and secure a resilient future.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore articulated this message, entitled “More Than A Quilt: Sustaining Multicultural Cohesion,” during the opening ceremonies of the International Conference on Cohesive Societies 2025 at Raffles City Convention Center, Singapore, on June 24. He recognized the profound connections between social cohesion, mutual respect and national strength, which combined serve as a powerful reminder of what is possible when communities come together with shared hopes and a common purpose.

A cohesive society is built on more than tolerance or the celebration of diversity. It requires active effort to weave differences into a fabric of mutual respect, understanding and solidarity. In fostering respect for each other’s backgrounds and contributions, a society’s individuals create the foundational trust necessary for collective action. This trust becomes the glue that holds communities together through times of hardship, whether they’re battling climate-related disasters or social tensions.

The stories from different parts of our region exemplify this truth. In Malaysia, interfaith leaders come together to provide aid and comfort to disaster victims, turning acts of kindness into a message of unity. In Indonesia, teachers are trained to foster understanding among children from diverse faiths, planting seeds of respect and peace at a young age. These small deeds carried out consistently have the power to shift societal norms. When people see others stepping up with hope and respect, the change cascades into a culture that upholds human dignity, inclusivity and shared responsibility.

But respect and social cohesion extend beyond acts of kindness. They foster motivation, a deep internal drive that pushes individuals and communities to strive beyond their limitations. When they feel their society’s backing, the valuation of their efforts and that they are part of something larger, people gain confidence to overcome obstacles, rebuild after setbacks and take responsibility for their future. This motivation is vital in building resilient environmental and social ecosystems that can withstand shocks and adapt to change.

Inspiring hope and motivation

In nations grappling with conflicts, from the Middle East, Southeast Asia to the United States, this culture of respect remains a beacon of hope. Leaders and communities that emphasize dialogue, mutual understanding and respect, through interfaith initiatives, community dialogues or national campaigns, prove that enduring peace is rooted in respect. People who believe that they are respected and uplifted are more likely to contribute positively to society, support one another and work collectively toward shared sustainability and security.

Creating such societies requires everyone’s active participation: government leaders, civil society, educators, faith leaders and ordinary citizens. Educational programs that teach children about different cultures and faiths dispel stereotypes and foster acceptance early on. Community events that celebrate diversity and promote dialogue strengthen the bonds of trust and mutual understanding. Beyond adding resources or opportunities, these efforts cultivate a mindset, an internal motivation that celebrates unity and mutual respect as the highest ideals.

The power of respect and social cohesion is applicable at a national or community level and vital in responding to global challenges. Advanced economies are divided along racial, political and socioeconomic lines. Yet, even these societies have examples of individuals and groups bridging divides through faith, culture or common human values. They demonstrate that a community motivated by mutual respect can overcome the most entrenched divisions.

Building a resilient future requires us to weave the threads of respect and inclusivity into the fabric of our societies. More than supporting the disadvantaged with resources, it’s about inspiring hope in each other’s potential as well as motivation born of the belief that together we can overcome any obstacle. Communities that feel united by shared purpose and trust develop the strength to withstand crises, recover quickly and create a future where everyone has a stake in the success.

In addressing climate change, social conflicts or economic upheavals, let us remember that the foundation of resilience lies in our ability to foster genuine respect. Through it, we unlock the true power within families, communities and nations to transform challenges into opportunities for growth and renewal. We forge resilient societies that are more just, compassionate and enduring. That is unity’s true strength which can carry us through the most uncertain times toward a future grounded in hope and shared humanity.
