Diabetes is a chronic condition affecting millions globally and the numbers continue to rise. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 589 million people worldwide live with diabetes. Of those, 215 million are in the Western Pacific region — a figure expected to climb to 254 million by 2050. In the Philippines, diabetes affects approximately 7.5 percent of the adult population as of 2024, translating to roughly 4.7 million Filipinos.

Central to the initiative is the training of Watsons pharmacists by DPI experts. This transforms their role from medication dispensers to frontline support in chronic disease care. The program prioritizes early intervention, patient education, and consistent treatment adherence.

“Diabetes Philippines is deeply committed to improving the lives of Filipinos living with diabetes. We believe that education and early intervention can go a long way in preventing complications. This collaboration with Watsons allows us to bring that message closer to the public by equipping pharmacists — often the first point of contact — with the right tools and knowledge to help,” said DPI President Tiu.

Beyond detection, Watsons aims to offer meaningful, consistent support through trained pharmacists and readily available diabetes care essentials. This is in line with the company’s mission to become the go-to destination for health and wellness.

“Our goal has always been to give back to the community. Through this initiative, we’re helping our pharmacy teams gain a deeper sense of purpose. They’re not just dispensing medicine, they’re helping people live longer, healthier lives through confident, consultative care,” said Marte.

De Ramos added, “We’re truly grateful for Diabetes Philippines for walking alongside with this mission and advocacy, together, we can help build a future where Filipinos feel well supported, empowered to be well, even with the challenges of guidelines.”

Launched just in time for National Diabetes Awareness Month this July, the partnership underscores a shared mission to empower individuals and communities in managing diabetes and preventing its long-term effects.
