CHINESE Premier Li Qiang has called on world leaders to form an international artificial intelligence (AI) body to address the growing risks associated with the technology and to prevent a small number of countries or companies from dominating the field, according to a Bloomberg report as posted by Joseph Waring, Asia editor for Mobile World Live on July 28.
Speaking at an AI conference in Shanghai, Li said China would take the lead in pushing for global cooperation on AI development. He stressed the need for more international dialogue to manage the potential dangers of AI and to ensure balanced access to key resources and capabilities.
His remarks followed the recent release of a US AI strategy aimed at boosting the country’s dominance in the sector. The American plan includes cutting regulatory red tape, accelerating the approval of data centers, chip manufacturing, and energy infrastructure, and promoting US-developed hardware and software as global AI standards.
Li warned that if technological monopolies and restrictions continue, “AI will become an exclusive game for a small number of countries and enterprises,” Bloomberg reported. He also acknowledged that China faces a significant challenge due to a shortage of advanced AI chips, which remains a key bottleneck in the country’s ambitions.
The comments underscore rising tensions between China and the United States over leadership in the fast-developing AI industry, as both countries race to shape the future of the technology.
