THE Ilocos Norte-based Mariano Marcos State University’s (MMSU) recent partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) in Region 1 (Ilocos Region) and the Regional Ecology Center (REC) will focus on ecological waste management practices through education and public awareness campaigns.

The MMSU briefing also said that the campaigns will promote the circular economy which reduces waste and promotes sustainability by designing products and systems that are restorative and regenerative by design. It added that the REC will provide a platform for stakeholders to address regional ecological concerns and develop solutions to environmental challenges.

Established in 2019, the REC serves as a multi-sectoral, multidisciplinary pool of experts that provides technical expertise, information, training and networking services. It coordinates solid waste management mandates for the implementation of the law.

The signing of the memorandum of commitment between the DENR and MMSU, which was represented by Vice President for Planning and Strategic Foresight Mee Jay Domingo, took place on July 1 in Bauang town, La Union.

MMSU said the partnership also seeks to promote sustainable environmental practices and support the mandates of Republic Act (RA) 11898, or the Extended Producer Responsibility Law, and RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
