THE Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the National Power Corp. (NPC) have initiated a collaboration to integrate satellite technology into the nation’s energy infrastructure through a memorandum of agreement, signed on July 9, 2025.

The partnership is aimed at boosting energy reliability, improving disaster response, and refining environmental management.

PhilSA will provide satellite insights to assist NPC in identifying and monitoring sites for new power plants and transmission lines. This data will support strategic placement and development. Satellite imagery will also be used to quickly assess damage to energy facilities following natural disasters, enabling faster power restoration and improving the management of dams and their watersheds for flood control and water resource optimization.

“Through this partnership, we’re not just exchanging data or technology, we’re building something more sustainable,” Dr. Gay Jane Perez, PhilSA deputy director general for Space Science and Technology, said as she emphasized the holistic nature of the collaboration. “With access to near real-time satellite feeds, we’re enabling NPC’s engineers and field teams to extract insights and apply them directly to operations, whether that’s monitoring dams, planning energy projects, or responding to emergencies.”

“This partnership will help us perform our duties more efficiently, more effectively, especially in the planning and execution of projects, watershed management, the location of causes of outages in areas that are affected by the rain, and also planning our very complex supply chain of delivering fuel to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas,” said NPC President and CEO Fernando Martin Roxas, affirming the practical benefits of the partnership.
